It’s coming up on that time of year again – ‘The Stanley’s Cup’; and as per usual I will be making my prediction. I know, I know – I have a pretty bad record. I think I’ve correctly predicted only twice a team which would be in the finals; but I have yet to call it correctly with which team will actually hoist the famed cup. I also have predicted teams to finish last; and then they wind up winning the whole thing. When you think about it that’s pretty crappy. I mean just entering a team gives you a 25% chance of playing in the final (1 in 4); and when you throw in pizza and beer afterwards who wouldn’t want to enter – just to drink and eat?
This year is a bit weird as we will have some players who were unable to make the ‘big game’; and the tourny will also feature the next generation of newer goaltenders. Speaking of tenders, the Tomcats have had goalie fill ins throughout the season including Stevo (12th string) and Hollywood (4th string). The Sunny Sebrings will feature Hollywood in net and I think they will do quite well. I mean looking at the season Hollywood has played stellar in net; so it’s difficult to count out Sunny’s team considering it also has the dynamic scoring duo of Sunny and Soupy: along with El Choppo’s feared shot. BUT – El Choppo has missed many games this year and conditioning coaches are wondering if he has the stamina to make an impact deep into the tourny. Could that long a layoff heap too much pressure on Sunny and Soupy to carry the scoring load and force Hollywood to bail them out?
That being said I did a triple take when I looked at the Snowpants Studebakers. REALLY – How did he draft Sparky, Chevy, Eagle and Lovie? All these players are true scoring threats; not to mention the endless tenacity and energy of Snowpants himself. And he capped it off with veteran Sheep Dog playing D and the Terror (A past cup winner) in net. Quite frankly I need not go further. I BOLDLY predict Snowpants sips from the cup and wins the whole thing.
Who will be likely be in that final game? I think it’s harder to be definitive as the other three teams each have a solid cast of players and net minders. I’m going with the Rocky Ramblers and wouldn’t be too surprised to see the Tonto Thunderbirds as playing spoiler to my plans. The Thunderbirds have the Falcon in net – and that guys dripping in cup wins. The Ramblers have the Scuz in their net and this tourny may see the slow passing of the torch from Falcon to the newer breed of tenders like Scuz. On paper each team stacks well against the other; but I’m thinking Jingles isn’t yet 100% for the Birds and the team is heavily relying on veteran defense Bulldog and LaBamba. The Ramblers got Cribzie/Doc and the young core of Tweetybird/Squid to deal with. factor in Scuz in net (Whose played very well when called upon) and I say this….
My final call: Rocky Ramblers and Snowpants Studebakers in the final; with Snowy prevailing.
